Merlo — carboncino quasi fotografico (2011)

Blackbird — near-photographic charcoal drawing (2011)

2011 Charcoal on paper
Charcoal drawing of a blackbird on paper, with detailed plumage and softly rendered vegetation in the background.

A charcoal study of a blackbird in which close observation, tonal modelling and a restrained background give the animal a concentrated, almost photographic presence.

Description

Merlo is a charcoal drawing that studies the bird through detailed plumage and careful modelling of volume. The tonal range allows the body to emerge clearly from the surrounding paper while retaining the softness characteristic of the medium.

The background vegetation remains deliberately subdued, helping the blackbird become the focal presence without turning the image into a purely illustrative study.

Reading

The restraint of charcoal gives the work an intimate and direct character. Attention to the bird's physical structure becomes a way of slowing down the act of looking and recognising the complexity of an ordinary living presence.
