A double-page sketchbook work in which the human face becomes entangled with a network of roots, joining identity, memory and metamorphosis within a single object of study.
Description
In Radici e volti, the upper half is crossed by cyan and magenta veils that turn the skin into an almost electric organism, while the lower half returns to the earthier, more meditative presence of graphite.
The fold of the sketchbook acts like a scar: it separates and at the same time stitches together two states of consciousness. The eye, rendered with particular precision, becomes the pulsating centre from which the branching forms expand.
The work investigates identity, memory and belonging while maintaining a balance between the discipline of drawing and the freedom of the unfinished surface, allowing the paper to remain active within the image.
Critical note
The work continues an organic-surrealist line in which figure and landscape interpenetrate. The cyan-magenta passages set against neutral graphite create a clear tension between metamorphosis and memory.
The branches are not decoration applied to a face: they pass through the identity itself, suggesting what nourishes, shapes and sometimes restrains it.
